Q. Is a straight back required for meditating? Last week I was "led" to your book literally as I am an author myself and working on a new book. I am enjoying your book very much. It is just what I need for what I am working on spiritually and through my writing. My question is sometimes when I meditate, I start to slump as I get deeper into it. Is it necessary to keep a straight back the whole time? —C

A. No, it' s not necessary to keep your back straight for any length of time while meditating. In fact, it's just as useful to to meditate in a chair, on the sofa, or even in bed before sleeping. In eastern traditions, a straight back is said to keep energy flowing, and I agree this is useful. But if this is something your body can't do easily right now—then do what makes your body comfortable. About the slumping—as you go deeper into trance, it is very likely your body will slump forward or sideways. Don't panic! If you find yourself feeling "trapped" in a slump, simply say in your mind, "I'd like a lighter state of trance now," and you'll soon notice that the level of trance will decrease. You have complete control over how "deep" you do or don't go, when working this way.
